Introduction

The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) is a public foundation, funded by the taxpayer in the State of São Paulo, with the mission to support research projects in higher education and research institutions at the State of São Paulo, in all fields of knowledge. The constitution of the State establishes that 1% of all state taxes belong to the Foundation and the government transfers these funds monthly. The stability of the funding and the autonomy of the Foundation allow for an efficient management of the resources that has had a sizable impact. The Foundation works in close contact with the scientific community and all proposals are peer reviewed with the support of area's experts.

The Call FAPESP Investigator Grant for International Researchers aims to boost the scientific and technological leadership of São Paulo in multiple areas of knowledge. With this Call for Proposals, FAPESP wants to recruit up to twenty researchers who demonstrate exceptional expertise in their respective fields. This Call is open for researchers of all nationalities necessarily working and living abroad for at least 2 years who wish to establish or start a research career at research institutions located in the State of São Paulo. It seeks to stimulate the creation of opportunities, under internationally competitive conditions, for researchers with exceptional research backgrounds. Proponents need to demonstrate achievements after their doctorate research that indicate leadership capacity and great potential in any area of knowledge and research.

Applicants are expected to propose innovative, outstanding, and high impact research projects that also promote the development of highly qualified human resources, including undergraduate and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows pursuing high quality and impactful research.

1. Research themes

All areas of knowledge and research are eligible for this Call, from basic to applied research (bv.fapesp.br/en/).

2. Eligibility criteria

A researcher must comply with the eligibility requirements of FAPESP’s Young Investigator Grant (fapesp.br/en/yig). The following modifications of the guidelines specifically apply to this Call:

a) applicants must be working and living abroad for at least 2 years in research institutions, sponsored by international sources (postdoc, research fellow, and/or permanent positions);

b) applicants must demonstrate exceptional expertise and leadership in their respective fields, which should be evidenced through their scientific trajectory.

3. Characteristics of proposals under this Call

a) Candidates must follow the FAPESP’s rules and guidelines for submitting proposals for the Young Investigator Grant (fapesp.br/en/yig); exceptions in the eligible budget items are outlined in item 3.2;

b) Although collaborations with established groups at specific topics are allowed and encouraged, a competitive proposal must have a clear and independent line of research.

c) Research project must be written in English.

3.1. Duration of the Grant

a) The duration of the proposed project must be 60 months;

b) During the development of the research project, it is desirable that the Principal Investigator apply for open permanent positions at the host or other institutions in the State of São Paulo (tenure track option);

c) After the conclusion of the project, if the Principal Investigator obtained a permanent position in a university or research institution in the State of São Paulo, he/she can continue his/her research activities by applying for funding through FAPESP regular funding options, including the prestigious Young Investigator Grant – Phase 2, whenever he/she fulfill the specific requirements for each grant.

3.2. Support offered by FAPESP:

a) The resources to be allocated will follow the criteria established for each type of support;

b) A Young Investigator Fellowship, to be paid up to the total duration of the Grant or until the Young Investigator obtains a permanent position at an institution in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The monthly value of the Fellowship is announced at fapesp.br/3162;

c) Items allowed by FAPESP are described in item 8 of the Young Investigator Grant Guidelines (fapesp.br/en/yig);

d) Scholarships and post-doctoral Fellowships applies relative to the usual guidelines for the Young Investigator Grant (see item 8.1e in fapesp.br/en/yig);

e) Successful applicants living abroad will be granted traveling stipends to cover air tickets to support the applicant, following the rules outlined in fapesp.br/7771/auxilio-instalacao;

f) The resource limit for this Call is BRL 2.500.000,00 (two million five hundred thousand reais) per proposal. The Young Investigator Fellowship is not included in this limit.

4. Proposal submission and evaluation

The proposal submission will occur exclusively through FAPESP's SAGe system and will be split in three steps:

a) Pre-proposal submission;

b) Full proposal submission;

c) Online presentation & Interview. Candidates receiving positive reviews on their full proposals will be invited for an interview with members of the Evaluation Committee.

4.1. Submission of pre-proposal

The pre-proposal must be submitted in English exclusively via the SAGe system. The required documents are:

a) The SAGe menu path for this Call is: Nova Proposta Inicial > + Outras Linhas de Fomento > + Programas Especiais > + Projeto de Pesquisa – Jovens Pesquisadores Internacionais > + (link available soon).

b) Summarized CV in English (up to 5 pages) including the following key information:

Researcher identification:
1. Scopus ID
2. Google scholar profile
3. Scopus ResearcherID
Short career summary (<400 words);
A brief summary of outstanding scientific achievements and how they may contribute to the current proposal;
List of 5 most important publications; Indicate leadership role in the research results obtained and justify why these results are impactful;
Top 3 Invited talks;
Degrees and previous appointments.

b) Short Research Project (max 5 pages, single-space, font size 12): FAPESP is seeking for original, outstanding, innovative, and cutting-edge research proposal that identifies a gap in the literature, proposes a new hypothesis or question, and uses an innovative methodology. Interdisciplinary and high-risk proposals are welcome.

c) Budget items to be included through SAGe system; it is not necessary to include vendor quotations at this stage;

d) It is not mandatory to have selected the host institution at this stage;

e) A motivation letter explaining why you are applying for this Call and detailing your professional skills and previous experience that complements your CV.

4.2. Pre-proposal evaluation

An evaluation committee will judge the submitted proposals considering the following criteria:

a) Originality, innovation and impact;

b) Project importance and contribution to scientific knowledge;

c) Suitability of investigators’ scientific background to the project.

4.3. Submission of full proposal (for those approved in the pre-proposal phase)

The full proposal must be submitted through FAPESP’s proposal submission platform SAGe. Researchers selected in the pre-proposal evaluation will be requested by email to submit additional documentation in the SAGe system.

a) The applicants must ensure they have company-issued quotations for each capital equipment to be purchased in Brazil or abroad whose value is ten times higher than the minimum wage in Brazil. It is not necessary to submit invoices at this stage.

b) The full proposal must describe which activities will be tackled in each solicited fellowship (PhD, MsC, Scientific Initiation, Postdoc, etc.). A short 1-page summary describing research goals and schedule must be submitted for each requested fellowship.

4.4. Full proposal evaluation

The review process will follow the guidelines:

a) All proposals will be sent to at least two external reviewers and a FAPESP evaluation committee will weigh their evaluations and rank the proposals;

b) The reviewers will evaluate the proposal’s potential impact on the field; its relation to or differences from existing works; how it may provide new routes for the relevant open research challenges;

c) During this phase, along with the reviewer’s proposal evaluation, the committee will consider the following items:

i) Likelihood of having a high impact on the field if the project is successful;

ii) Proposal of alternative and effective experimental/theoretical strategies;

iii) Proponent’s capacity to initiate new strategic cooperation with research institutions at local, regional, and international level while preserving the research independence.

5. Final results

a) Upon receiving a final positive recommendation of the full proposals, the awarded candidates will be invited to a virtual interview;

b) The nomination of the selected candidate is final and therefore no appeal for reconsideration is possible.

Les recordamos que, hasta el próximo domingo 6 de abril de 2025, se reciben las postulaciones al llamado 01-25 a estudiante de grado o posgrado, en el marco del Proyecto CSIC titulado: “Caracterización funcional y estructural de la lactonasa clave para la biosíntesis de urolitinas a nivel de la microbiota intestinal”.

El estudiante estará bajo la supervisión de los responsables del proyecto, Dr. Ari Zeida y la Dra. Cecilia Chavarría. Realizará la expresión recombinante y purificación de la enzima, así como la caracterización bioquímica y biofísica de la misma.

Descripción: Curso dirigido a estudiantes avanzados y de posgrado. Provee de conceptos de cinética enzimática y de mecanismos, así como de herramientas
prácticas para el trabajo con enzimas.

Coordinadora: Beatriz Alvarez (beatriz.alvarez@fcien.edu.uy)

Fecha: Primer semestre, entre el 19 de marzo y el 30 de mayo de 2025.

Primera clase: Miércoles 19 de marzo, 13 horas, presencial, en la Facultad de Ciencias.

Teórico/taller: Una instancia semanal, presencial, de cuatro horas, los días miércoles de 13 a 17 horas, entre el 19 de marzo y el 28 de mayo, en la Facultad
de Ciencias. Se contabilizan 40 horas. Se alternarán exposiciones teóricas con ejercicios y discusiones de resultados de trabajos científicos. Los estudiantes realizarán presentaciones.

Prácticos: Un práctico de laboratorio por semana, presencial, de cuatro horas, los días viernes de 13 a 17 horas, entre el 21 de marzo y el 30 de mayo. Se contabilizan 40 horas. Los estudiantes deberán elaborar un informe en grupo con los resultados de cada práctico.

Ganancia del curso: El curso se ganará por asistencia a los teóricos (60 %) y a los prácticos de laboratorio (80 %), realización de las presentaciones de temas y artículos, y aprobación de los informes de práctico. La ganancia del curso habilita a rendir el examen.

Evaluación: Examen
